    Datacenter computers: modern challenges in CPU design

    Computers used as datacenter servers have usage patterns that differ substantially from those of desktop or laptop computers. We discuss four key differences in usage and their first-order implications for designing computers that are particularly well-suited as servers: data movement, thousands of transactions per second, program isolation, and measurement underpinnings. Maintaining high-bandwidth data movement requires coordinated design decisions throughout the memory system, instruction-issue system, and even instruction set. Serving thousands of transactions per second requires continuous attention to all sources of delay – causes of long-latency transactions. Unrelated programs running on shared hardware produce delay through undesired interference; isolating programs from one another needs further hardware help. And finally, when running datacenter servers as a business it is vital to be able to observe and hence decrease inefficiencies across dozens of layers of software and thousands of interacting servers. There are myriad open research problems related to these issues

    Thread-Modular Static Analysis for Relaxed Memory Models

    We propose a memory-model-aware static program analysis method for accurately analyzing the behavior of concurrent software running on processors with weak consistency models such as x86-TSO, SPARC-PSO, and SPARC-RMO. At the center of our method is a unified framework for deciding the feasibility of inter-thread interferences to avoid propagating spurious data flows during static analysis and thus boost the performance of the static analyzer. We formulate the checking of interference feasibility as a set of Datalog rules which are both efficiently solvable and general enough to capture a range of hardware-level memory models. Compared to existing techniques, our method can significantly reduce the number of bogus alarms as well as unsound proofs. We implemented the method and evaluated it on a large set of multithreaded C programs. Our experiments showthe method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in terms of accuracy with only moderate run-time overhead.Comment: revised version of the ESEC/FSE 2017 pape

    Statistical Analysis of Influence of Soil Source on Leaching of Arsenic and Copper from CCA-C Treated Wood

    Leaching of wood preservatives affects the long-term efficacy and environmental impact of treated wood. Soil properties and wood characteristics can affect leaching of wood preservatives, but these effects are not well understood. This paper reports a statistical analysis of the effects of soil and wood properties on leaching of arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) from southern yellow pine sapwood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA-C). Specimens were leached by an accelerated laboratory method for 12 weeks in soil obtained from different locations or in water. Loss of Cu and As was measured using X-ray fluorescence and correlated with various physical and chemical soil properties. Leaching was greater from specimens with higher initial As and Cu retentions. Average Cu loss was approximately equal to or greater than As loss for specimens exposed to soil; for specimens leached in water, As loss was about twice that of Cu loss. Generally, more Cu leaching occurred from specimens in soil contact compared to specimens in water, suggesting that ground-contact leaching studies of the new copper-rich systems should employ soil-based methods for realistic depletion measurements. The amount of As and Cu leached was influenced by soil properties. Depletion of Cu and As from CCA-treated wood appears to be differentially related to various soil properties as well as to initial As and Cu retention in the wood. This research will help develop a standard laboratory method for soil-contact leaching of metals from CCA and other copper-based preservative systems

    Ecology and Transmission of Buruli Ulcer Disease: A Systematic Review

    Buruli ulcer is a neglected emerging disease that has recently been reported in some countries as the second most frequent mycobacterial disease in humans after tuberculosis. Cases have been reported from at least 32 countries in Africa (mainly west), Australia, Southeast Asia, China, Central and South America, and the Western Pacific. Large lesions often result in scarring, contractual deformities, amputations, and disabilities, and in Africa, most cases of the disease occur in children between the ages of 4–15 years. This environmental mycobacterium, Mycobacterium ulcerans, is found in communities associated with rivers, swamps, wetlands, and human-linked changes in the aquatic environment, particularly those created as a result of environmental disturbance such as deforestation, dam construction, and agriculture. Buruli ulcer disease is often referred to as the “mysterious disease” because the mode of transmission remains unclear, although several hypotheses have been proposed. The above review reveals that various routes of transmission may occur, varying amongst epidemiological setting and geographic region, and that there may be some role for living agents as reservoirs and as vectors of M. ulcerans, in particular aquatic insects, adult mosquitoes or other biting arthropods. We discuss traditional and non-traditional methods for indicting the roles of living agents as biologically significant reservoirs and/or vectors of pathogens, and suggest an intellectual framework for establishing criteria for transmission. The application of these criteria to the transmission of M. ulcerans presents a significant challenge

    The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & NemĂ©sio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; NemĂ©sio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016
